Afonso Sousa was born in 2000 in Aveiro, Portugal. He began his football journey in the youth academy of Beira-Mar before quickly moving to Porto’s youth system. He played a key role in Porto U19’s 2019 Youth League victory and later made a name for himself in the league with Belenenses SAD. In 2022, the attacking midfielder transferred to Polish side Lech Poznań, where he especially stood out in the 2024–25 season with 13 goals and 5–6 assists, earning the award for best midfielder of the season. Wearing the Lech shirt, he played over 90 matches, scoring 20 goals and providing 11 assists, making his mark on European football.

Afonso also has extensive experience at the national level, representing Portugal’s youth teams from U15 to U21 more than 40 times. His U21 debut in 2021 and first goal in 2022 further highlighted his potential on the international stage. With strong roots, high football intelligence, and excellent finishing, this young star perfectly fits the profile of a modern number 10.

In the summer of 2025, Sousa entered a new chapter in his career by transferring to Samsunspor and stepping into the Süper Lig. Signing a five-year contract with the red-and-white club, his transfer fee was reported to be between 3 and 4.5 million euros. Although he played in the Champions League qualifiers last season, opening a new page in European competitions has been postponed for now. However, with his scoring ability and playmaking skills, he is expected to make a major contribution to Samsunspor’s midfield.
